Sugar The bitter truth

I am watching this talk by Robert H. Lustig, MD, UCSF Professor of Pediatrics in the Division of Endocrinology, where he explores the damage caused by sugary foods. He argues that fructose (too much) and fiber (not enough) appear to be cornerstones of the obesity epidemic through their effects on insulin.

Will cite some of his most important ideas mentioned in the talk...

We believe one principle:
if you eat it - you better Burn it, or else you will Store it!

Well... that's NOT True! That is the Biggest Mistake we made - is believing this statement!
Why? Well Robert will try to debunk this one in his lecture

Now all around the world we have an obese 6 month old kids! How can this be?

We all eat more now. How much more per day compared to 20 years earlier:
 Boys ~270 cal / day  - MORE
Men: ~180 cal / day - MORE
Women: ~300 cal / day  - MORE

Why -because a system which tells us - "ok, I have had enough.." isn't working anymore!
There's something wrong with our biochemical process which normaly regulates our energy balance!

And if we splitt apart what we eat more - it isn't FAT that we eat more, it's Carbohydrates!

Coca-Cola conspiracy...
they have salt in the coke! and Salt makes you feel - thirsty !!! They add sugar off course, to hide the salt! They know what they are doing!

In soft drinks they put HFCS: High Fructose Corn Syrup, which is sweeter and cheaper than sugar!
And HFCS and Sucrose are exactly the same - they are equally bad! They are both Dangerous ...

They are both POISON!

Drinking Sodas - many think that we get obese because of the calories ... Yet it has NOTHING TO DO WITH CALORIES, it has to do with Fructose - which is POISON!!!

So comparison of consumption of  fructose:
Natural : ~15 gr/day
if we took it from fruits and vegetables we would consume
Prior WWII: 16..24 gr/day
1977-1978: 37 gr/day
1994: 54 gr/day
Today: Adolescents: 72,8 gr/day

Cause of the obesity:
it's not just that we eat more ... We eat more SUGAR!
This is a disaster.. The fat intake is going down, the Sugar is going up - and we all are getting SICK!

Comparing Glucose to Fructose
Fructose is not Glucose!!!

What happens when we eat Glucose(sugar):
80% of it gets consumed by ALL of our cells and organs in our body ( Glucose is the energy source for us)
20% gets delivered to the liver: there it will stimulate the pancreas to make insulin
And some of it gets stored in the form of Glycogen (non toxic form) for later reuse
Almost all is good, some of the sugar gets into a form DLDL which causes heart attacks, yet not much... (if you consume very very small amounts and from natural sources - vegetables/fruits
Brain gets a signal which tells - I have received food, so it stops our need for more food!
Almost all is GOOD

Let's compare to other Acute Carbohydrate ETHANOL (alchohol)
it causes maaaaaany many ill's  :) ( we all went to College :)  we know better  :) )
Ethanol is a toxin, we know it - that's why we try to control it's consumption!

Let's see what happens to the Fructose:
Only the liver can metabolize fructoze - that's why it's poison!
In the liver it creates various substances(york acid, fructose 1 P,  ) , use various enzymes to metabolize.. which causes hypertension,
Fructose directly affects your FAT growth, it basically directly grows your fat!

High sugar diet - is a high fat diet!
And some of the fat will not ever make it out of the liver
Creates liver insulin resistance - insulin can't do any good in the liver, this create higher insulin levels, and causes further obesity, higher blood pressure
Fructose changes the way your brain recognizes the energy, it basically thinks it's starving
Fructose tricks your brain - telling you that the body is hungry, which tells the body - to go & get more food!
Fructose releases Free Radicals which damage our body cells

Fructose Summed up:
- Hypertension
- Continued consumption
- High Insulin
- Inflammation
- Obesity
- Addiction
- Fetal insulin resistance
- electrolyte abnormalities
- Pancreatitis

Almost the same as Ethanol

Fructose is a POISON!

Why is exercise important in Obesity? (1:11)
To burn fat??? Hell no! that one is a joke!
True answers:
1. Because it improves skeletal muscle insulin sensitivity
2. Because it reduces stress, and resultant cortisol release
Stress and obesity goes hand in hand... the less stress - less obesity!
3. Because it makes the TCA cycle run faster. and detoxifies fructose, improving hepatic insulin sensitivity

You got to be joking when saying - exercise to burn fat... You got to be mountain-biking for 10 hours to burn 1 bigmac of calories ... :)

Why fiver is important in Obesity?
Eat your carbohydrates with fiber
1. Reduces rate of intestinal carbohydrate absorption, reducing insulin response
yet you will fart :)
2. Increases speed of transit of intensinal contents to ileum, to raise PPY And induce satiety

3. Inhibits absorption of some free fatty acids to the colon,  which are metabolized by colonic bacteria to short-chain fatty acids (SCFA), which suppresses insulin!

Fructocification of America and the rest of the World!

Summary:
- Fructose (or sucrose) consumption has increased in the past 30 years(coinciding with obesity epidemic)
- A calorie is not a calorie, Fructose is not Glucose
- You are not what you eat, you are what you do with what you eat!
- Hepatic fructose metabolism leads to all manifestations of Metabolic Syndrome (google it)
- Fructose injection interferes with obesity intervention
- Fructose is a chronic hepatotoxin (it's "alcochol without the buzz") And FDA will not regulate it!
